How do I answer this question? Let me count the ways… I will treasure my family and friends more, each minute of every day, and let them know how much I love them. I will attend more live performances, because art-in-the-moment thrills me. I will live, somehow, in Manhattan and Europe – maybe Vienna, again – while keeping hometown ties to Lansing, Michigan. I will read more, write more, do more, and learn more about the ways in which our institutions can embody the values of wise stewardship and statecraft, rather than greed and conceit. I will continue the work of my forefathers and mothers, and seek to fulfill the standards they have set and the opportunities they have provided, to do the right thing, to make the world a better place. I will grow old while my heart stays young, and learn to play the piano (but not sing—it's too painful!). I will live by Micah's lights, to act justly and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with my God. I will live so that my legacy becomes that others have lived better, have become elevated, and have gladly taken on the duty of passing it on—strengthened by love and grace, in service to the Almighty and our common human future.
