The origin of my interest in social consciousness is in my childhood. I grew up in a Jewish working class family in Buffalo, NY. My father worked at the Ford Motor Company, on the line. There were two framed photographs on the wall in the dining room. One was a photo of Walter Reuther and the other of Arthur Goldberg (the attorney who worked for the CIO and the AF of L). My parents believed that helping other people, especially those with less, was very important. It didn't matter if others didn't believe in that. We did because if no one helped us by hiring Jews, by giving my father a job when Ford closed the plant, we would have had a very difficult time making ends meet. Since then, I have been deeply involved in many social causes. Zula's theme of teaching tolerance, in addition to its media messages about astronomy, space, and environmental issues like global warming, is the perfect vehicle for learning about tolerance and difference. Zula is a model for bringing people together.
