Stephen K. Friedman
Stephen K. Friedman is Vice President, Strategic Partnerships and Public Affairs, MTV: Music Television. In this position, he develops long-term strategic initiatives and all of MTV's on- and off-air pro-social campaigns, and oversees their implementation.
Mr. Friedman developed and coordinated MTV's Emmy Award-winning Fight For Your Rights (FFYR): Take a Stand Against Violence campaign, FFYR: Take a Stand Against Discrimination, and the Choose or Lose 2000 voter registration campaign. This year, he oversees FFYR: Protect Yourself, one of the largest sexual health media campaigns in history, recent winner of the Emmy for best National PSA Campaign in 2001. He works closely with MTV's programming, research, on-air promotions, affiliate and advertising sales departments to develop strong, effective pro-social campaigns addressing the issues that most concern MTV's young adult viewers.
Mr. Friedman also develops partnerships with the U.S. Government, foundations, and non-profit organizations. He initiated a long-term media partnership with the Kaiser Family Foundation, and developed programming partnerships with The Pew Charitable Trusts, the Ford Foundation, and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. He recently co-executive produced MTV's Global Discussion with Colin Powell and helped coordinate the MTV/USO Special: For the Troops. Additionally, Mr. Friedman works with company executives to identify new channel-wide business and strategic opportunities and integrate them into programming, such as MTV's 20th Anniversary campaign.
Mr. Friedman serves on the Advisory Board of Viacom's Campaign on HIV/AIDS and the Advisory Board of Hollywood, Health and Society (Partnering Entertainment, Education and the CDC).
Prior to joining MTV, Mr. Friedman was a Vice President at Robinson, Lerer & Montgomery, a strategic consulting firm in New York where his clients included Microsoft and NBC. He has also served as a Director for the PEN American Center (the international writers' human rights organization) and has contributed articles to Entertainment Weekly and Details magazine as a freelance writer.
Mr. Friedman holds a B.A. with Honors from Wesleyan University.
